Dan York, CISSP, LPIC, MCSE, CTT+
I am a writer. A speaker. An author.
A teacher. An explainer. A blogger. A podcaster.
An analyst. A strategist. A futurist. An evangelist. A technologist. A community
developer. A lover of language. A communicator.
A storyteller.
My goal with my writing, speaking, podcasting, etc is to try to tell the story of
all the changes that are going on all around us in both the way we communicate
and also the tools we use to communicate. I weave the threads of that larger
story through my various weblogs and podcasts:
- Disruptive Conversations - how the
"social media" of blogs, podcasts, wikis, virtual worlds, etc. are changing the
way we communicate
- Disruptive Telephony - how
Voice-over-IP (VoIP) is fundamentally changing the technology we use to communicate
- Emerging Tech Talk - a video podcast on
emerging communication technologies, iPhone apps, or frankly whatever else I feel like
covering
- Voxeo Weblogs - how the work of my employer, Voxeo, is relevant to this world and also why open standards matter
- Voice of VOIPSA - a group weblog from the
Voice Over IP Security Alliance on voip security issues
- Blue Box: The VoIP Security Podcast - a
(almost) weekly podcast about Voice-over-IP security issues
- Blog.danyork.com - my personal weblog on random
subjects... Vermont, programming languages, curling, Linux and more...
- Twitter.com/danyork - my "microblog"
where I write on various issues in 140 characters or less
- For Immediate Release - a twice-weekly
podcast by Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson where I contribute reports usually on Thursdays
How well I tell that story is something you will have to judge. I hope that I can help
explain and de-mystify the new and emerging technologies that are changing the way we
communicate, both at a technical and personal level. I am constantly fascinated by the
ways that, for instance, the "social media" of blogs, podcasts, etc. are
fundamentally changing how communication occurs online and within the media. I am
intrigued by how voice-over-IP is severing the relationship between voice communication
and location - and by how the increasing penetration of broadband and higher-speed
computers are letting us run more powerful applications. I don't think we yet fully
understand how this all will impact our society and lives, but through my writing and
speaking I try to tell the story of the changes around us.
I've been using computers since the first Apple II in 1978 and since then have worked
with a very wide range of computers, operating systems, programming languages and
applications. I entered into the online world in the mid-1980s with BBSs, BITNET and early
Internet and have been involved with building online communities and efforts ever since.
I've been blogging since 2000 and podcasting since 2005.
I am also a father. A husband. A son. A brother. A lover of the outdoors. A curler. A hiker. A kayaker. A
bicyclist. A skier. A snowshoer. A voracious reader. A German speaker. A wood turner. A
lover of art and theatre and music. A poet. A follower of politics. A realistic idealist.
A skeptical optimist. All of these are part and parcel of who I am.
I am the Director of Conversations at Voxeo heading
up our external communication programs, am on the board of the global Voice Over IP Security Alliance (VOIPSA) and am involved
in a number of other activities that I mention from time to time in my writing.
You can also find me on LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo Pulse and pretty
much most other social networking site..
